Food Allergies

Allergy to Nuts

Tree nut allergy — to almonds, walnuts, cashews, pistachios, pecans, hazelnuts and others — is a common, usually lifelong food allergy. Patients allergic to one tree nut frequently react to others, and nuts appear in many prepared foods, baked goods, sauces and oils where they are easy to miss.

Common symptoms

  • Itching of the mouth, throat, eyes or skin
  • Hives or swelling
  • Nausea, cramping or vomiting
  • Nasal congestion or wheezing
  • Anaphylaxis in severe cases

Diagnosis & treatment

Testing identifies exactly which nuts trigger a reaction — some patients can safely eat certain nuts while avoiding others, though many allergists advise avoiding all tree nuts when one causes severe reactions. Dr. Rollins provides an individualized avoidance plan, emergency medication guidance and periodic monitoring.
