Allergies to Animals
Dog Allergy
Dog allergy is a reaction to proteins in a dog’s dander, saliva and urine. All dogs produce these proteins — so-called hypoallergenic breeds may shed less, but no breed is allergen-free. In New York City apartments, where space is limited, dander concentrates quickly, and the bedroom is usually the room that matters most.
Common symptoms
- Sneezing, runny nose and congestion
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Coughing or wheezing
- Hives or eczema after contact
- Asthma flare-ups in sensitive patients
Diagnosis & treatment
After confirming the allergy with testing, Dr. Rollins helps patients weigh their options: environmental controls (a dog-free bedroom, HEPA filters, frequent washing), symptom-controlling medication and immunotherapy, which can meaningfully reduce sensitivity over time and is often the best path for committed pet owners.
