Allergies to Animals
Rodent Allergy
Rodent allergy — to mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs and gerbils — is triggered by proteins in the animals’ urine, saliva and dander. In New York City it matters beyond pet ownership: mouse allergen is widespread in urban housing, and studies have found it in the majority of NYC apartments, where it is a significant driver of childhood asthma.
Common symptoms
- Sneezing and nasal congestion
- Itchy eyes, nose or skin
- Hives after handling a pet rodent
- Coughing or wheezing
- Worsening asthma, especially in children
Diagnosis & treatment
Testing identifies rodent allergen sensitivity. For pet owners, controls include cage placement away from bedrooms, frequent cleaning by a non-allergic family member and hand washing. For pest-related exposure, integrated pest management — sealing entry points, removing food sources and professional extermination — is the treatment that works. Medication and immunotherapy address remaining symptoms.
